The sirens in Vasa Township are planned to be removed. Please make sure you have alternate means to receive severe weather warnings.

The sirens were originally installed to warn of emergencies at the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant. In Vasa Township, these are the same sirens which sound for severe weather.

As of August 15th, 2025, Xcel Energy has decommissioned the use of the sirens, and will instead use Wireless Emergency Alerts. Mobile phones in the affected area will receive critical messages related to the nuclear plant automatically; no signup is required.

The sirens themselves will no longer be maintained, and will be removed at some time in the future. In the meantime, the sirens will continue to be activated for severe weather as long as they remain in working order.

For your safety, please make sure you have a reliable way to receive emergency weather information. Consider signing up for Goodhue County CodeRED Community Emergency Alerts.
